    NEXT PRESIDENT IS REGARDED AS CERTAIN TO BE THE LIBERAL PARTY CANDIDATE, DR RENE SCHICK, A 54-YEAR-OLD LAWYER WHO IS THE PRESENT FOREIGN MINISTER AND WHO HAS THE SUPPORT OF THE OUTGOING PRESIDENT LUIS SOMOZA.

    OPPOSITION CANDIDATE IS DR DIEGO MANUEL CHAMORRO, ALSO A LAWYER. SON OF A FORMER PRESIDENT, HE REPRESENTS THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY - WHOSE LEADER, DR FERNANDO AGUERO, HAS REFUSED TO TAKE A PERSONAL PART IN THE ELECTIONS UNLESS THEY WERE SUPERVISED BY THE ORGANISATION OF AMERICAN STATES OR SOME OTHER FOREIGN AUTHORITY.
