  • Description

Leeds United's hopes of winning the English first division championship sank on Saturday when they lost at home 1-2 to West Bromwich, but the game will be remembered for scenes of crowd violence without precedent on the Elland road ground, after Geoff Astle scored West Bromwich's second goal in the 70th minute.

The trouble stemmed from an off-side decision by the referee, Mr. Ray Tinkler, who waved on play when a linesman had his flag up for off-side.

Dozens of Leeds fans, enraged by the decision, invaded the pitch after Astle scored, and struggled with police. Play was held up for five minutes, and 23 fans were arrested.

Albion went 2-0 ahead with the disputed goal, and went on to win 2-1 -- their first away victory since December, 1969.

Leeds had led the first division since the start of the season last August, but they have now been displaced by Arsenal.
