Background: RAIN SWEEPING THE COURSE AND PLAYING HAVOC WITH VISIBILITY TURNED TODAY'S (SUNDAY'S) BELGIAN GRAND PRIX INTO ONE OF THE TOUGHEST MOTOR RACES EVER RUN AT FRANCORCHAMPS.JIM CLARK, THE 27-YEAR-OLD SCOT, DROVE HIS LOTUS-CLIMAX TO VICTORY FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN SUCCESSION.

CLARK (NO.1) LED THROUGHOUT THE 32-LAP RACE, SECOND EVENT OF S YEAR'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, AND CLOCKED 2 HOURS 27 MINS 47.6 SECS OVER THE 451-KILOMETRE (280 MILE) DISTANCE.THE ONLY DRIVER TO OFFER ANY CHALLENGE WAS BRITAIN'S GRAHAM HILL (NO.7) WHO RETIRED ON THE 18TH LAP WHEN HIS BRM DEVELOPED A FAULTY GEARBOX.

THIS ENABLED AMERICAN DAN GURNEY'S BRABHAM-CLIMAX(NO.18) TO MOVE INTO SECOND POSITION.BUT TOWARDS THE END, IN THE WORST OF THE RAIN, GURNEY FELL BACK WITH WATER SWIRLING IN HIS COCKPIT, AND WAS PASSED BY BRUCE MCLAREN OF NEW ZEALAND (NO.14), DRIVING A COOPER -CLIMAX, TWO LAPS FROM THE FINISH.

MCLAREN CAME IN SECOND IN 2 HOURS 32 MINS 41.6 SECS; GURNEY FINISHED ONE LAP BEHIND.CONDITIONS WERE SO BAD THAT EVEN THE WINNING SPEED WAS THE SLOWEST FOR TEN YEARS.THERE WAS AN UNUSUALLY LARGE NUMBER OF RETIREMENTS, SOME BECAUSE OF MECHANICAL TROUBLE, OTHERS DUE TO MINOR ACCIDENTS.ONE OF THE COLLISIONS INVOLVED BELGIAN DRIVER BIANCHI (No.22) IN A LOLA, AND HOLLAND'S DE BEAUFORT (No.29) IN A PORSCHE OF 20 STARTERS,ONLY SIX CARS WERE RUNNING AT THE END.

FOURTH PLACE WAS TAKEN BY RITCHIE GINTHER, UNITED STATES,ONE LAP BEHIND IN A BRM.FIFTH WAS SWEDISH COOPER DRIVER JOACHIM BONNIER; AND SIXTH DE BEAUFORT, BOTH TWO LAPS BEHIND.
