  • Description

Nearly 200 political prisoners were released by the Indonesian government in Jakarta on Wednesday (1 December) after having been in prison since an unsuccessful coup attempt against the government of President Sukarno in 1965.

SYNOPSIS: The ages of the prisoners ranged from a 32-year-old exstudent leader to a 72-year old former journalist. The Indonesian State Security Command said the prisoners were the first of nearly 30,000 prisoners that would be released during the next three years. A total of 2,000 prisoners are expected to be freed during the first week of this month. The prisoners had to take an oath to be abide by the Indonesian constitution and to refrain from "disseminating communist doctrines." This was backed by a pledge in writing.

The release of these prisoner was conducted as public ceremony. The Indonesian Security Chief of Staff. Admiral Sudono, said it would serve as a warning to "anarchists". He said that the government planned to establish resettlement homes for the released prisoners. He added that these centres were needed, particularly for prisoners whose homes were in areas of high unemployment.

The Admiral said the government thought areas of unemployment might prove "fertile ground for resorting to acts contrary to the law."
