    The Congo-Kinshasa public prosecutor has demanded sentences of life imprisonment for thirteen students accused of committing an outrage against state security. The prosecutor's demand came when the trial of the students resumed in Kinshasa on Friday (August 20). The students are accused of having aimed at changing the regime or of inciting civil war. They pleaded not guilty. They were alleged to be the leaders of the incidents in June at Kinshasa's Lovanium University which ended in a clash with soldiers.

    The incidents led to the temporary closure of the University and to a deep reform of Congo-Kinshasa's higher education.

    SYNOPSIS: In Kinshasa, the public prosecutor has demanded life sentences for thirteen students. The President of the tribunal, citizen Bokuma, heard the prosecutor accuse the student's of committing an outrage against state security. The students are accused of having aimed at changing the regime or of inciting civil war.

    All the accused have pleaded not guilty. They were alleged to be the leaders of the incidents in June at Kinshasa's Lovanium University, which ended in a clash with soldiers.

    The incidents led to the temporary closure of the university and to a deep reform of Congo-Kinshasa's higher education. The court heard of the symbolic burial of a coffin on June 4, anniversary of the death of six students in a clash with the army two years ago. The burial followed a vigil with songs, poems and speeches.
