  • Description

Colombian Antonio Cervantes, battered his way to victory over Australia's Hector Thompson to retain his world light-welterweight title in Panama on Saturday (15 November).

Cervantes wore down the resistance of the tough 26-year-old challenger until the referee stopped the bout in the seventh round.

It's the tenth time Cervantes has defended the title since he won it in Panama three years ago. For Thompson it was the second title-challenge of his career -- and the second defeat. Lats time he was knocked out in the eighth round by Roberto Duran of Panama.

Cervantes dominated the bout from the start, and in the seventh round he opened a big cut beside Thompson's right eye with a succession of deadly accurate lefts.

When the bell rang for the end of the round, it was obvious that Thompson would not be able to carry on and the referee declared the Colombian the winner.
