  • Description

Aspiring young matadors in the Spanish town of Pamplona had another chance to prove their courage in the traditional `running of the bulls' ceremony on Friday (7 July).

SYNOPSIS: Every day during the week-long event, seven fighting bulls are let loose along the 1.5 kilometres of narrow cobbled streets leading to the stadium.

And every year, thousands of Spanish and foreign tourists crowd into Pamplona to witness the ancient festival of San Fermin, made famous by American writer Ernest Hemingway. Hundreds of "aficionados" try to keep ahead of the charging bulls and confusion reigns as runners, and the bulls, try to squeeze through the narrow bullring entrance.

The spectacle provides amusement for the crowd, who watch from a safe distance, But each year, almost inevitably, at least one young challenger is either killed or severely injured. Despite the violence, the bulls are always bigger, and every year the drama continues in the ring.
