    JAPAN PEACE FOR VIETNAM COMMITTEE YESTERDAY (MONDAY) GAVE A PRESS CONFERENCE IN TOKYO AT WHICH THEY SHOWED A FILM OF FOUR AMERICANS SAID TO BE DESERTED FROM THE UNITED STATES NAVY.

    THE COMMITTEE SAID THE FOUR ... MICHAEL LINDNER, JOHN BARILLA, RICHARD BAILEY AND CRAIG ANDERSON ... HAD DESERTED FROM THE UNITED STATES NAVY AIRCRAFT CARRIER INTREPID RATHER THAN SERVE OFF VIETNAM.

    THE MEN WERE NOT PRESENT AT THE PRESS CONFERENCE, AND THE COMMITTEE DID NOT SAY WHERE THEY WERE. BUT THEN FILM SCREENED FOR JOURNALISTS INCLUDED A JOINT STATEMENT IN WHICH THEY SAID ESCALATION OF THE WAR WOULD LEAD TO DIRECT CONFRONTATION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, AND TO WORLD WAR.

    "THE SYSTEMATIC BOMBING OF AN AGRICULTURAL, POVERTY-STRICKEN COUNTRY BY A TECHNOLOGICAL SOCIETY IS CRIMINAL," SAID THE STATEMENT. IT ADDED THAT THE FOUR WERE SEEKING POLITICAL ASYLUM IN JAPAN.
