  • Description

JUBILANT CROWDS IN MUFULIRA, A TOWN IN NORTHERN RHODESIA, THRONGED THE STREETS ON WEDNESDAY (JAN 22) CELEBRATING THE ELECTION VICTORY OF DR. KENNETH KAUNDA -- NOW THEIR FIRST PRIME MINISTER. HIS UNITED NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE PARTY HAD GAINED ITS EXPECTED MAJORITY.

THIS WAS THE TIME FOR A VICTORY DRIVE BY THE LOCAL U.N.I.P. MEMBER, MR. JOHN CHISATA, PRESIDENT OF THE AFRICAN MINEWORKERS UNION. MUFULIRA ITSELF LIES IN THE RICH COPPER-MINING BELT.

DURING THE PRE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN POLICE HAD MARKED IT A TROUBLE-SPOT, AND SENT IN REINFORCEMENTS. THEIR PATROLS HAD TO USE TEARGAS TO BREAK UP A STONE-THROWING BATTLE BETWEEN SUPPORTERS OF THE TWO MAIN PARTIES. BUT WITH THE ELECTION OVER, EVEN THE OPPOSING PARTY JOINED IN THE CELEBRATIONS.

NOW, UNDER THE NEW CONSTITUTION, NORTHERN RHODESIA -- ONE OF AMERICA'S RICHEST TERRITORIES BECAUSE OF ITS COPPER DEPOSITS -- GETS INTERNAL SELF-RULE WITH THE FORMING OF THE GOVERNMENT. DR. KAUNDA HIMSELF HOPES HIS COUNTRY WILL BECOME INDEPENDENT ON OCTOBER 24, THEN TO BE KNOWN AS ZAMBIA.
