    CELEBRATIONS WERE HELD THROUGHOUT GREECE ON FRIDAY MARKING THE 145TH ANNIVERSARY OF GREECE'S INDEPENDENCE FROM TURKISH RULE. KING CONSTANTINE AND QUEEN ANNE-MARIE ATTENDED A SERVICE AT ATHENS CATHEDRAL, AND THE KING, ON HORSEBACK, TOOK THE SALUTE AT A MILITARY PARADE IN THE GREEK CAPITAL.

    THE SERVICE IN ATHENS CATHEDRAL WAS ATTENDED BY LEADING MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT, FOREIGN REPRESENTATIVES AND REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ARMED FORCES. THE TE DEUM WAS CONDUCTED BY THE ARCHBISHOP OF ATHENS, MGR. CHRYSSOSTOMOS.

    MODERN WEAPONS OWNED BY THE GREEK ARMED FORCES WERE ON PARADE LATER AS KING CONSTANTINE TOOK THE SALUTE. TANKS AND OTHER WHEELED VEHICLES ROLLED PAST THE REVIEWING STAND BEFORE LARGE CROWDS. THEY WERE FOLLOWED BY A DISPLAY OF GREECE'S MISSILE STRENGTH - INCLUDING HONEST JOHN, HAWK AND NIKE MISSILES.

    SEVENTY-EIGHT PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED IN THE CITY DURING THE DAY'S CELEBRATIONS. MOST HAVE BEEN RELEASED BUT SEVEN ARE TO APPEAR IN COURT ON CHARGES OF "INSULTING POLITICAL LEADERS, CAUSING BODILY HARM TO POLICE OFFICERS AND RESISTING THE AUTHORITIES".
