  • Description

British Moto Cross riders surprised and delighted 50,000 spectators at Brands Hatch, Kent, by taking first and second places in a truly international meeting.

Before the racing started teams from seven nations formed a parade led by the Dagenham Girl Pipers. The teams were then presented to Mr. D. S. Heather, Chairman of the motor cycle section of the Cycle and Motor Cycle Manufacturers Association in this order: Denmark, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and British Empire.

World's champion Bill Nilsson of Sweden looked confident at the 'call over' but it was to be British Empire day with J. V. Smith and G. D. Curtis, first and second on BSA's and B.W. Martin seventh, also on a BSA.

A Belgian rider, B. Beeten was third, G. Johansson (Sweden) fourth, N. Jansen (Belgium) fifth and H. Scaillet (Belgium) sixth.

Nilsson, (Number 27) quickly went into the lead from a field of 28 riders. Over the 16-mile course, rough riding over the chalk pit drop, the woods, the grass, he built up a three-lap lead.

But the world champion ran into transmission trouble and had to pull into the pits. And the British and Belgium stars closed up the gap. From that point the race developed into a tussle between the two countries.

The Italian riders, on their Gileres, had been eliminated in earlier heats.

At the half way stage, Britain's Jeff Smith and Dave Curtis had moved into first and second positions and though, on the last of the fifteen laps, veteran Beeten of Belgium, tried to break through, he couldn't quite find the race of the British pair.

There were few spills, but at the start of the final one rider took a tumble and sent another careering through the bunting at the side -- luckily no-one was hurt.

And on the winner's rostrum it's 22-year old Smith who receives the accolade of Mr. Heather...and 50,000 cheering fans.
