Indonesian President Soekarno arrived in Washington, D.C., April 24 for a one-day visit and told President Kennedy, "It is my fervent hope that America and Indonesia will always be close friends".
Mr. Kennedy, warmly greeted the neutralist Southwest Asian leader - despite Indonesia's recent criticism of the Cuban landings as "aggression" - and praised him as "a distinguished national leader, the father of his country and a leader of the world".
President Soekarno, wearing the smart grey uniform of Commander-in-Chief of the Indonesian Armed Forces, received a 21-gun salute and 'ruffles and flourishes' of the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. Then Army, Navy and Marine units lining the field were reviewed by the two Presidents.
Other countries to be visited during the President's 3-month world trip are Ghana, Egypt and various European countries including the Soviet Union.
