  • Description

Relations between Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba were cemented last week when the Trinidadian Prime Minister, Eric Williams, made a special visit to Havan.

He was greeted at the airport by Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro, and a number of top government officials.

Dr. Willians' visit came in the wake of the Organisation of American States' recent decision relaxing an official ban on diplomatic relations with the Cuban Government. Trinidad and Tobago had, in fact, defied the O.A.S. ban by resuming relations with Cuba in 1972.

The O.A.S. move virtually lifted eleven-year-old trade sanctions on the island republic, and is seen as a major step towards regularising full relations between Cuba and the United States.

Cuba's trade has hitherto been centred on the Communist countries of eastern Europe. The Cuban economy, however, suffers a chronic balance of payments problems. Diversification of export markets would ease the state's economic problems.
