  • Description

RUDI ALTIG OF WEST GERMANY, RIDING FOR THE ST. RAPHAEL TEAM, TODAY (SUNDAY) WON THE ONE-DAY TOUR OF FLANDERS CYCLING RACE. THE RACE IS RUN OVER 149 MILES (240 KM).

135 COMPETITORS ENTERED THE RACE - WHICH IS HELD ANNUALLY AND USUALLY ATTRACTS A BIG ENTRY FROM MANY PARTS OF EUROPE.

THE WEATHER WAS FINE AS THE CYCLISTS STARTED OUT FROM GHENT BUT THEIR PROGRESS WAS HAMPERED BY STRONG WINDS AS THEY RODE WESTWARDS TO BRUGES. ONCE PAST BRUGES, THE WIND THAT HAD BEEN A HINDERANCE BECAME A HELP AND WITH THE BREEZE BEHIND HIM, THE DUTCH RIDER WIM VAN EST TRIED TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE BUNCH AS THEY APPROACHED TORHOUT. HE HELD A CLEAR LEAD FOR ABOUT THIRTY MILES (48 KM) BUT WAS THEN OVERHAULED BY THE OTHERS.

40 MILES (64 KM) FROM THE FINISHING LINE RUDI ALTIG PULLED TO THE FRONT OF THE BUNCH - AND BREAKING AWAY SOON LED BY NEARLY TWO AND A HALF MINUTES. HE WON BY FOUR MINUTES AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF ABOUT 25 MILES PER HOUR (42 KM H.).

THE WORLD CHAMPION, BENONI BEHEYT FINISHED SECOND.
