  • Description

Princess Margaret watched salvage teams and bulldozer crews at work Mar 29 amid the wreckage of Glasgow's whisky warehouse destroyed by explosion and fire the previous night. The fire - described by the British Insurance Association as the most disastrous financially since the Great Fire of London nearly 300 years ago - took the lives of 19 firefighters and destroyed property and whisky stores worth between GBP2 1/2-5M.

The horror of the night became a giant daylight salvage operation. The Princess to be wed May 6 walked within a few feet of the huge mound of rubble and stepped over hoses still operating to cool the smoking remains. She asked the City Fire Officer to give her sympathy to the families of the men who died.

UK firemen will give them GBP20,000 as a first donation to relieve their hardship.
