    IBADAN, THE REGIONAL CAPITAL OF WESTERN NIGERIA, ERUPTED INTO VIOLENCE LAST WEEKEND AS SOME ELEMENTS OF THE ARMED FORCES TRIED TO SEIZE POWER. THERE WERE REPORTS OF FIGHTING IN THE STREETS OF THE CITY BETWEEN REBEL TROOPS AND SOLDIERS LOYAL TO MAJOR-GENERAL IRONSI. BUT MORE VIOLENCE BROKE OUT EVEN AS THE MILITARY ADMINISTRATION HEADED BY GENERAL IRONSI WAS CONSOLIDATING ITS POSITION. IN IBADAN IT WAS FIGHTING BETWEEN SUPPORTERS OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND SUPPORTERS OF THE OPPOSITION UPCTA PARTY.

    FOR SOME MONTHS THERE HAS BEEN UNREST IN IBADAN. THE UPCTA PARTY ALLEGED THAT LAST YEAR'S ELECTIONS WON BY THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAD BEEN RIGGED. THE ELECTION WAS WON BY CHIEF AKINTOLA WHO WAS SHOT DEAD IN IBADAN LAST WEEKEND.

    HOUSES BELONGING TO PROMINENT MEMBERS OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WERE BURNT AND LOOTED. SUPPORTERS WERE KILLED.

    NEWSMEN VISITING THE TOWN AS THE DISORDERS QUIETENED DOWN SAW BURNT-OUT CARS SCATTERED ABOUT IN THE STREETS -- AND DEBRIS FROM DAMAGED SHOPS AND OFFICES LITTERED ACROSS THE PAVEMENTS. LEADING MEMBERS OF BOTH PARTIES FELL VICTIM TO LOOTERS AND ASSASSINS. IT IS REPORTED THAT SOME ELEMENTS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE CONFUSED SITUATION THROUGHOUT NIGERIA TO PROMOTE TROUBLE IN IBADAN.

    CASUALTIES FROM THE RIOTING HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL WHICH HAS ESCAPED DAMAGE.
