    A LITTLE KNOWN SWISS RIDER, BENY HERGER, EASILY WON HIS HEAT -- THE THIRD -- IN THE AMATEUR MOTOR-PACED EVENT OF THE WORLD CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS WHICH OPENED IN ROME YESTERDAY (MONDAY). THE FIRST AND SECOND HEATS WERE BOTH WON BY ITALIAN RIDERS -- A CARNIEL AND G. GRASSI RESPECTIVELY.

    THE TRACK EVENTS, BEING HELD IN ROME'S VELODROMO OLIMPICO, WERE CUT SHORT BY A TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR OF RAIN IN THE LATE AFTERNOON.

    IN THE SECOND HEAT OF THE MOTOR-PACE EVENT, GRASSI FINISHED 27 YARDS (25 METERS) AHEAD OF HOLLAND'S C. STAM, IN THE TIME OF 40 MINUTES 28.5 SECONDS.

    HIS TIME WAS BETTERED IN THE THIRD QUALIFYING HEAT BY THE SWISS RIDER HERGER, WHO FINISHED IN 40 MINUTES 24.4 SECONDS 35 YARDS (32 METRES) AHEAD OF ITALIAN RIDER A. CASTELLO. HERGER AVERAGED A LITTLE OVER 46 MILES AN HOUR FOR THE 50 KILOMETRES.

    THE FAVOURITE, SOVIET RIDER MIKHAIL MARKOV, WHO WON THE SILVER MEDAL LAST YEAR, FINISHED THIRD.

    MORE THAN 100 TOP PROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR RIDERS ARE COMPETING IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS WHICH END NEXT SUNDAY WITH THE MEN'S ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP OVER A 170-MILE (280 KILOMETRE) MOUNTAIN COURSE AT IMOLA.
