Background: Barry Ditchburn of Great Britain won Sunday's invitation Gauloises Powerbike International at Brands Hatch in southern England.

SYNOPSIS: The French cigarette manufacturers are relative newcomers to motorcycle racing sponsorship, and they admit they got into the sport with some reserve. But, they say, that reserve has soon dispelled.

Forty-four riders from the United States, France, Germany, Finland, Holland, Spain and Britain -- including the world 500cc champion Barry Sheene -- took part in the invitation event. Sheene's major rival, Pat Hennen of the United States, was there too.

But neither Sheene nor Hennen were able to get top honours in this event, although the American did manage to come in third.

It was Barry Ditchburn, riding a 750cc Kawasaki, who had started off, in row two, who took the lead early on. And he stuck to it....
At the chequered flag, it was Barry Ditchburn followed by another Briton, Dave Potter, with American Pat Hennen third.
