  • Description

A large Union Jack, flanked by two red-white-red Austrian flags, was hoisted in front of the new concrete and glass buildings at Vienna's Schwechat Airport, June 23, as Britain's Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd arrived here for a three-day official visit.

Mr Lloyd was received by his Austrian counterpart, Dr. Kreisky, who had visited London in February. In the presence of Dr Gschnitzer, state secretary in the Austrian Foreign Office, and other senior official's Dr Kreisky welcomed the British guest and said that relations between Britain and Austria had for long been good and warm, and a new bridge had recently been built through their both joining the same economic association - the Outer Seven.

During the visit, Dr Kreisky added, there would be serious and important discussions on how further to improve the two countries' relations, and among other topics of general interest would be European co-operation.

recalling his last visit to Vienna in 1946, Mr Lloyd paid a tribute to the "courage and determination" shown by the Austrian people, since those difficult days, in overcoming their economic and political problems. It was true, he said, that the state treaty had resulted in military neutrality for Austria, but this had not prevented her from expressing her own views freely and firmly.
