Background: INTRODUCTION: Some 450 people are dead or missing after a blazing Indonesian passenger ferry sank in a storm in the Java Sea. Indonesia authorities estimated on Sunday (1 February) that about 730 people had been rescued, many of them plucked from the rough waters where the ferry -- the "Tamponas Two" -- went down on Tuesday (27 January).

SYNOPSIS: The survivors were taken to Surabaya, on Java's north-east coast, and to Ujung Pandang, the capital and main port of south Sulawesi (Celebes). They told reporters that some passengers that some passengers fell into burning holds while trying to escape the sinking ferry boat. The "Tamponas Two" was ablaze for more than 24 hours before it sank.

The captain of the vessel, who's still missing, was reported to have suspected sabotage when the fire broke out on the car deck. The ill-fated ship was on a voyage from Jakarta to Ujung Pandang, 1,000 miles (1600 kilometres) to the east.
