  • Description

Information and culture ministers from Arab Resistance Countries, meeting in Algiers on Monday and Tuesday (17 and 18 April), have agreed on more co-operation to publicise their opposition to Egypt's Middle East peace proposals.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting was attended by representatives of Algeria, Syria, the Libyan Jamahiriyah, South Yemen and the Palestine Liberation Organisation, the PLO.

The meeting was opened by Algerian Information Minister, Mr Reda Malek, and according to the Algerian Press Service the ministers agreed on the importance of publicity as a way of counter-acting what was described as pro-Israeli and pro-Egyptian propaganda. It was decided that there should be regular exchanges of information, meetings between Press, radio and television officials, and a greater availability of each others Press material.

It was announced that some meetings had already been arranged, notably one, which will be attended by Arab Resistance Front "intellectuals" who oppose the peace moves of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

The aim of the Algiers meeting has been to consider ways of putting into effect decisions taken by the hard-line Arab leaders at their conference in Tripoli and Algiers itself.

Arab opponents of President Sadat, first met in Tripoli last December, and had a second summit in Algiers in February.
