  • Description

A RECORD NUMBER OF 17-THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE TAKING PART IN THE ANNUAL NIJMEGEN MARCHES IN HOLLAND, WHICH STARTED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). TWENTY-TWO NATIONS ARE TAKING PART THIS YEAR. THE MARCHES ARE NOT A COMPETITION. THEY ARE DESCRIBED BY OFFICIALS OF NIJMEGEN -- WHICH IS IN THE EASTERN PART OF THE COUNTRY NEAR THE WEST GERMAN BORDER -- AS BEING A TEST OF STAMINA AND PHYSICAL FITNESS. THEY WERE STARTED IN 1909 BY THE DUTCH LEAGUE OF PHYSICAL CULTURE AND HAVE BEEN HELD ANNUALLY, EXCEPT FOR THE WAR YEARS.

MORE THEN 50-THOUSAND PEOPLE BRAVED THE RAIN TO WATCH THE OFFICIAL FLAG RAISING CEREMONY AT NIJMEGEN STADIUM TO HERALD THE START OF THE MARCHES. FOR THE NEXT FOUR DAYS THE COMPETITORS WOULD BE MARCHING ACROSS THE PICTURESQUE COUNTRYSIDE SURROUNDING THE TOWN. THERE ARE DIFFERENT ROUTES AND DISTANCES FOR CIVILIAN AND MILITARY MARCHERS AND THEY VARY FROM 18 TO 30 MILES (30 TO 50 KMS) A DAY.

MOST OF THE TEAMS ARE MILITARY AND THE BIGGEST CONTINGENT IS FROM THE BRITISH ARMY WITH 1,600 MEN. THE GREAT FAVOURITES WITH THE CROWD THIS YEAR ARE THE KILTED MARCHERS FROM THE QUEEN'S OWN HIGHLANDERS, WHO HAVE TRAVELLED FROM THEIR BARRACKS IN WEST BERLIN TO COMPETE.
