    THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE ENVOY TO THE MIDDLE EAST, MR. GUNNAR JARRING, WAS DUE TO FLY TO BEIRUT TODAY (TUESDAY) ON THE FIRST ROUND OF ESTABLISHING CONTACTS WITH THE ARAB STATES AND ISRAEL. MR. JARRING SET UP HIS HEADQUARTERS ON SUNDAY IN NICOSIA, CYPRUS, AND YESTERDAY HE PAID A COURTESY CALL ON THE PRESIDENT, ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS.

    MR. JARRING, A SWEDISH DIPLOMAT, WAS APPOINTED TO HIS POST LAST MONTH BY THE SECURITY COUNCIL. THE ANNOUNCEMENT DID NOT GIVE HIS ITINERARY, BUT HE IS EXPECTED TOP HAVE A SIX-MAN STAFF. HE CALLED ON PRESIDENT MAKARIOS YESTERDAY ACCOMPANIED BY MR. GEORGE PELAGIAS, OF THE CYPRIOT MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS. MR. JARRING'S TALKS WITH THE PRESIDENT OF CYPRUS CONTINUED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR.

    CYPRUS WAS ITSELF THE CENTRE OF INTERNATIONAL TENSION RECENTLY, WHEN TURKISH CONFRONTATION WAS FOLLOWED BY AN AGREEMENT BY GREECE TO REMOVE ITS TROOPS FROM THE ISLAND. AT THE TIME MR. JARRING WAS MEETING PRESIDENT MAKARIOS -- WHO FAVOURS A UNION BETWEEN CYPRUS AND GREECE AGAINST THE WISHES OF TURKEY -- ANOTHER GROUP OF GREEK SOLDIERS WAS PREPARING TO LEAVE THE ISLAND FOR HOME.

    A NUMBER OF THE SOLDIERS SPENT THE AFTERNOON ON A BIG SHOPPING SPREE IN LEDA STREET, THE BIGGEST SHOPPING CENTRE IN NICOSIA, BUYING PROVISIONS FOR THEIR TRIP AND OTHER ARTICLES TO TAKE HOME WITH THEM.
