  • Description

A spokesman of the Eritrean Liberation Front's foreign mission in Beirut, Lebanon, told a news conference in the city on Friday (6 June) that tens of thousands of Eritrean people were now facing certain death from starvation because the Ethiopian Government had burned their towns, villages and crops.

The spokesman, Mr. Omar Al Burj, said there were about 250,000 refugees or displaced persons who were without food, shelter or medical assistance. He alleged that the Ethiopian Government had forbidden food supplies from reaching drought stricken areas of Eritrea.

Mr. Burj claimed that because of this, the Ethiopian Government had refused the Red Cross and other foreign relief organisations permission to fly food and medicine in to alleviate the suffering of local people.

He called on all peace-loving people and humanitarian organisations to condemn the inhuman behaviour of the Ethiopian military authorities.

Last week more sporadic fighting was reported between Eritrean guerrillas and Ethiopian Government troops, despite the acceptance by both sides earlier of Sudanese peace plan. The plan had been announced by President Jaafar El Nimeiry of Sudan on 27 May. It called for an immediate ceasefire, amnesty for Eritrean separatists and unconditional peace talks.
