  • Description

MOUNTAINEERING PRACTICE IN A GYMNASIUM - THAT'S THE LATEST IDEA FROM LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND, WHERE ONE WALL OF A NEW SPORTS HALL HAS BEEN EQUIPPED WITH ARTIFICIAL HOLDS.

THE MEMBERS OF LIVERPOOL UNIVERSITY'S MOUNTAINEERING CLUB USE THE WALL REGULARLY, SWINGING FROM THE ARTIFICIAL HOLDS BY THEIR HARDENED FINGERTIPS. THE WALL IS 40 FT. (12 METRES) HIGH AND VERTICAL. THIS MEANS THAT NATURAL MOUNTAINEERING CONDITIONS CAN BE SIMULATED IN COMPLETE SAFETY WITH LEDGES AND CHIMNEYS OF CONCRETE AND HOLDS OF PROJECTING AND RECESSED BRICKS.

THE CLIMBING WALL WAS THE IDEA OF FORMER WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS AND ENGLAND FOOTBALLER, BILL SLATER, WHO IS NOW THE DIRECTOR OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION. HE SAW IT AS A MEANS OF TEACHING BEGINNERS IN COMFORT WITH NO ACCIDENT WORRY, AND AS A USEFUL PRACTICE RUN TO KEEP EXPERIENCED CLIMBERS IN TRIM.

AT FIRST, THE WALL WAS REJECTED AS BEING TOO EASY. BUT IT WAS SOON REALISED THAT BY LEAVING OUT SOME OF THE ARTIFICIAL AIDS THE CLIMB COULD BE MADE AS DIFFICULT AS WAS DESIRED. IN FACT THERE IS AN INFINITE VARIETY OF ROUTES TO BE FOLLOWED, AND BY LEAVING OUT SOME OF THE EASIER AIDS, THE ROUTE CAN BECOME A SERIOUS PROBLEM.
