Background: St. Andrew's School in Blantyre is a member of the British Ship Adoption Society, and a party of the boys and girls are off to visit the ship they adopted. For months the school and the pupils have received many a practical geography lesson by following the ship's activities. And so seizing the first opportunity that the Clan Maclay visited the nearest port, the party journeyed to Beira. On their arrival, Captain Davidson the master of the Clan Maclay was there to greet them. Bundling on to a bus bound for the docks, the kids had that strange experience of meeting an old friend for the first time. And there she lay, straight ahead. The 6 thousand ton Clan Maclay had discharged a cargo of machinery, textiles and fancy goods, taking on chrome and manganese, sugar, copper, rubber and tea from the Federation. Well the kids had the run of the sip and revelled in every minute of it. The school made various gifts to the ship and received a life belt and a life jacket in return. These will make vivid souvenirs back at St. Andrew's in Blantyre, and the friendly relationship will continue between the school and its favourite ship.
