  • Description

A SHIPMENT OF COPPER WAS AIRLIFTED FROM ZAMBIA TO TANZANIA YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) IN AN EXPERIMENT TO FIND AN ALTERNATIVE OUTLET FOR THE LAND-LOCKED COUNTRY'S BIGGEST EXPORT. NORMALLY ZAMBIA SENDS ITS COPPER BY RAIL THROUGH REBEL RHODESIA TO PORTS IN MOZAMBIQUE.

SO FAR, COPPER SHIPMENTS THROUGH RHODESIA HAVE BEEN UNAFFECTED, BUT IN CASE THE RAIL LINK IS CUT ZAMBIAN COPPER AUTHORITIES WANT A READY ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO MAINTAIN THEIR WORLD MARKETS.

A SPOKESMAN FOR LOCKHEED, WHICH CO-OPERATED IN THE AIRBRIDGE, SAID THE EXPERIMENT WENT VERY WELL. THE GIANT TRANSPORT CARRIED 23 TONS OF COPPER BARS. IT COMPLETED THE 1750-MILE (2800-KM) ROUND TRIP BY RETURNING TO ZAMBIA WITH NEARLY 6000 GALLONS (27,275 LITRES) OF FUEL.

LOCKHEED ESTIMATE THAT ONE HERCULES COULD CARRY 20,000 TONS A YEAR TO THE EAST AFRICAN COAST. THEREFORE, 35 AIRCRAFT COSTING GBP900,000 EACH WOULD BE NEEDED TO CARRY ZAMBIA'S CURRENT EXPORT PRODUCTION. THE AIRCRAFT FIRM THOUGHT THAT FREIGHT COSTS COULD COMPETE WITH THE PRESENT SURFACE TRANSPORT.
