DELEGATES FROM EAST AND CENTRAL AFRICA ARRIVED AT MAKERERE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, KAMPALA THIS WEEK FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PHYSICAL EDUCATION. THE CONFERENCE IS DESIGNED TO ACHIEVE A CLEARER DEFINITION OF THE ROLE AND POTENTIAL OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN EAST AND CENTRAL AFRICA.

THE CONFERENCE HAS BEEN MADE POSSIBLE BY A GRANT FROM THE UNITED STATES INFORMATION SERVICE TO MAKERERE'S DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION. OPENING THE CONFERENCE, THE UGANDA MINISTER OF EDUCATION, DR. LUYIMBAZI-ZAKE, SAID THAT IN THE UNDERPRIVILEGED COUNTRIES MANY CHILDREN WERE POOR, UNDERNOURISHED AND ILL-EQUIPPED MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY AS A RESULT OF DEMORALISING CUSTOMS. YET IT WAS FROM THESE CHILDREN THAT THE FUTURE LEADERSHIP WOULD EMERGE - THEY MUST BE TRAINED IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION. CONFERENCE CHAIRMAN DR. ROBERT MOTT, OF THE UNITED STATES, SAID THAT ONE OF THE AIMS OF EDUCATION WAS TO PREPARE THE INDIVIDUAL FOR THE WORTHY USE OF LEISURE TIME. THE CONFERENCE ENDS ON SATURDAY 12 APRIL.
