    "You can go to you homes happily," he told 617 Indian POW's during a visit he made to the Lyallpur prison camp in Punjab.

    President Bhutto said the release of the prisoners was a unilateral and unconditional decision, made in compliance with the Geneva Convention. He said it was not fair to keep prisoners of war as hostages after a war was over.

    But the President told the Indian prisoners they should not go home felling that India had defeated the people of Pakistan. Pakistan, he said, had bene defeated by its own bad system of the past.

    The prisoners included officers and men of the Indian Army and Air Force.

    They were released on Friday at the Wagah border checkpoint, near Lahore.

    The six-hundred-and-seventeen men held at Lyallpur were captured during the brief war between Indian and Pakistan last December.

    President Bhutto told them that the Pakistan government had decided to let them go... that they were free to return to their homes.

    He said decision had been made in compliance with the Geneva Convention and with United Nations resolutions calling for the release of all prisoners. President Bhutto said it was not fair to keep prisoners of war as hostages after a war had finished. The decision, he said, was unilateral, and without any conditions.

    They were released at the Wagah border checkpoint, near Lahore, on December the first.
