  • Description

THE CAMELS CAME TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA FROM AFGHANISTAN A CENTURY AGO. THEY HAULED GOLD AND GROCERIES, WATER AND RUM ACROSS THE INLAND DESERTS. TODAY, ONLY THE ABORIGINES STILL SADDLE THEIR CAMELS TO GO WALKABOUT.

EVEN IN A DROUGHT YEAR, THE ABORIGINES FROM SANTA THERESA MISSION STATION, NEAR ALICE SPRINGS, HEAD OUT INTO THE DESERT. THE YOUNGER MEN, WORKING AS STOCKMEN ON THE STATION, TRAVEL THE SAME ROAD IN A DIFFERENT WAY.

THE AFGHAN CAMEL DRIVERS HAVE LONG GONE BUT THEY'VE LEFT THIS COUNTRY A LEGACY. WILD CAMELS ARE DRIFTING IN FROM THE SIMPSON DESERT IN HERDS UP TO THREE HUNDRED STRONG. DROUGHT HAS FORCED THEM FAR FROM THEIR NORMAL GRAZING LANDS IN A DESPERATE SEARCH FOR FOOD AND WATER. AS THEY MOVE THEY PASS EVIDENCE THAT THEY WILL HAVE TO GO FARTHER YET. MANY OF THEM ARE DROPPING FROM EXHAUSTION; EVEN WHEN THEY REACH A BORE THEY MAY FIND IT DRY.

BUT THE SMELL OF WATER LINGERS AND DRAWS WILD HORSES AS WELL AS THE CAMELS. THE BORE IS DRY -- THE WEAKENED BEASTS WILL DIE OF THIRST.

THE DROUGHT BRINGS ANOTHER TORMENT FOR ALL LIVING CREATURES -- THE SULLEN SKY THREATENS A DUST STORM. THEY'LL RIDE ON, LOOKING FOR SHELTER. DUST STORMS ARE NO NOVELTY -- IN SOME AREAS THERE'S BEEN ONE EVERY FEW WEEKS FOR SEVEN YEARS. UNTIL THE LONG-AWAITED RAINS COME, THE MEN AND THEIR CAMELS WILL BEAR THE HARDSHIP AS THEY ALWAYS HAVE.
