    Senior Russian diplomats in Cairo and members of the Egyptian Government on Monday (29 May) celebrated the first anniversary of the signing of the Soviet-Egyptian Friendship Treaty with a reception at Cairo's Omar Khayyam Hotel.

    The Soviet Embassy was represented by the Ambassador, Mr. Vinogradoff. and representing the Egyptian Government were the Speaker of the National Assembly Mr. Hafez Badawy, the Minister of Information Dr. Hatem and the First Secretary of the Arab Socialist Union's Central Committee, Mr. Sayed Marei.

    The Soviet-Egyptian Friendship Treaty, signed during President Podgorny's visit to Cairo in May 1971, binds the people of Egypt and the Soviet Union to "unbreakable friendship" for fifteen years. The 12 articles in the Treaty affirm that the two countries will work together in many spheres - including military and technological cooperation.
