Background: LEADING REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MALAGASEY REPUBLIC, INCLUDING THE WIFE OF PRESIDENT PHILIBERT TSIRANANA, AND VICE-PRESIDENT CALVIN TSIEBO, VISITED THE MANANKAVALY LEPER SETTLEMENT AT TANANARIVE, THE MALAGASEY CAPITAL, JAN 28, TO MEET THE PATIENTS IN A FESTIVE CEREMONY MARKING THE 9TH WORLD DAY FOR LEPROSY SUFFERERS.

ONE PROMINENT GUEST AT THE CEREMONY WAS M. RAOUL FOLLEREAU, FOUNDER - IN 1946 - AND PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL AND INTER-DENOMINATIONAL ORDER OF CHARITY, A VOLUNTARY ORGANISATION DEVOTED ENTIRELY TO GIVING RELIEF TO THE WORLD'S 16 MILLION LEPROSY CASES, SPREAD OVER SOME 120 NATIONS.

PATIENTS AT MANANKAVALY ONE OF THE MANY THERAPEUTIC CENTRES WHERE MODERN MEDICINE IS GRADUALLY RESTRAINING THE 3,000-YEAR-OLD SCOURGE - GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGED THE PUBLIC ATTENTION ACCORDED TO THEM SO PALPABLY ON THIS DAY. HIGH SPIRITS PREVAILED DESPITE THE TERRIBLE MUTILATIONS INFLICTED BY THE DISEASE. A DANCING DISPLAY WAS GIVEN BY THE MORE ABLE-BODIED, AND MODEST PRESENTS WERE HANDED AS TOKENS OF GRATITUDE TO VICE-PRESIDENT M. RAOUL FOLLEREAU, WHO REMINDED THE SUFFERERS OF THE THOUSANDS OF PRAYERS SAID FOR THEM THE WORLD OVER AND OF THE INCESSANT EFFORTS BY SCIENTISTS AND DOCTORS TO WIPE THE DISEASE FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH.

LEPROSY, CAUSED BY A BACILLUS SIMILAR TO THOSE OF SYPHILIS AND TUBERCULOSIS, OCCURS CHIEFLY IN HOT DRY CLIMATES AND IS MOST COMMON IN TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL ASIA AND AFRICA. AFFECTING THE SKIN, NERVES, MUCOUS MEMBRANES AND LYMPHATIC GLANDS, IT PRODUCES DEGENERATIVE CHANGES OFTEN RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF NOSE TISSUE, FINGERS AND TOES. SOME PATIENTS BECOME PROGRESSIVELY PARALYSED, AND THE DISEASE, IN ITS CHRONIC FORM, MAY LAST 20 TO 30 YEARS.
