    Highlights of the 5th day of the Winter Olympics at Sapporo on Monday (7 Feb) included the Men's Downhill skiing event in which Switzerland won another gold medal. 23-year-old Bernhard Russi of Andermatt was fastest down the steep, winding, 2,640 metre course... taking only one minute 51.4 seconds.

    Holland's top speed skater, Ard Schenk, became the first man in 20 years to win three skating golds in any one Olympics, when he outstripped other competitors in the 10,000 metres event... covered in a time of 15 minutes 1.35 seconds. He had earlier won the 1,500 and 5,000 meters races at Sapporo.

    On the Makomanai indoor ice pink an aggressive ice-hockey match between Russia and Sweden resulted in interruptions for fighting among the players, and ended in a draw... three goals each. Sweden have thus managed to challenge what has been Russian supremacy in the competition.

    SYNOPSIS: Mount Enwia near Sapporo, on Monday, where skiing events on the fifth day of the Winter Olympics included the Men's Downhill event.

    Among contestants in the 2,640 metre steep and winding event was bernhard Russi of Andermatt, representing Switzerland. (PAUSE 5 SECONDS). The Swiss ace, who had won the world Downhill Championships two years ago, and was starting at number four, on a clean track... took a perfect line down through the course. (PAUSE 5 SECONDS) Russi's time was one-minute 51.4 seconds.

    Also prominent in the Downhill field was Collombin of Switzerland... but he was unable to match the skills of Russi, although eventually placed second.

    Russi won the gold medal, with follow-Swiss Collombin second, and Heinrich Messner of Austria third.

    At the Olympic outdoor Speed Skating Rink an ???ager crowd awaited the start of the 10,000 metres event.

    Ard Schenk of Holland, on the outside of the field, sat off confidently... having, earlier at the Games, won gold medals int the 1,500 and 5,000 metres events.

    The Dutchman became the first man in 20 years to win three skating gold medals in any one Olympics.

    Meanwhile, at the Makomanai Indoor Rink on Monday. Russia and Sweden met in what was to rove an aggressive ice-hockey draw.
