Background: After several days at the centre of student unrest in Cairo, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat took time off on Wednesday (26 Jan) for religious observances connected with the three-day Bairam, or Muslim Feast of Sacrifice.

It is the principal Muslim festival, commemorating Abraham's sacrifice and coinciding with the pilgrimage to Mecca.

President Sadat visited, in the company of Ministers and Muslim ambassadors, the Hussein and Nasser Mosques in Cairo.

SYNOPSIS: President Sadat dealt with the situation by warning demonstrators against splitting the Home Front, and saying it was for the Government to decide on the appropriate time to begin what he has called the inevitable war with Israel. He also revealed his decision to visit Moscow for important talks on the Middle East crisis. Now, with the disturbances apparently at an end, the Egyptian President, a devout Muslim, was able to join his brothers in the prayers of the Principal festival of the Muslim year, commemorating Abraham's sacrifice and coinciding with the pilgrimage to Mecca.

The President later visited the Nasser Mosque for further prayers. There he laid flowers on the tomb of the dead President, who was his friend and colleague since their days in army training together.
