THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL TODAY (6 AUGUST) TRIED TO EASE TENSION IN THE MIDDLE EAST RESULTING FROM ISRAEL'S AIR STRIKE ON SUNDAY (4 AUGUST) AGAINST JORDAN.

THE LATEST MIDDLE EAST FLARE-UP COINCIDES WITH ONE OF THE MAJOR EVENTS OF ISRAEL'S TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY YEAR - THE DEFENCE FORCES EXHIBITION IN TEL AVIV.

THE COUNCIL RESUMED TODAY AFTER YESTERDAY'S (5 AUGUST) EMERGENCY SESSION TO HEAR CHARGES BY BOTH COUNTRIES.

JORDAN HAS CALLED FOR INTERNATIONAL SANCTIONS AGAINST ISRAEL WHICH ON SUNDAY MADE A REPRISAL AIR-RAID AGAINST AN ALLEGED ARAB ENCLAVE. JORDAN CLAIMED THE RAID KILLED 34 PEOPLE, WOUNDED 82, AND DESTROYED 4.9 MILLION POUNDS (STERLING) WORTH OF CROPS. BOTH SIDES HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN SUBSEQUENT MORTAR ATTACKS.

ISRAEL ACCUSED THE JORDANIAN GOVERNMENT AND ARMED FORCES OF CONNIVING AND ENCOURAGING TERRORIST ACTS BY ARAB COMMANDOS.

MEANWHILE, THE UNITED STATES AND BRITAIN HAVE BOTH CONDEMNED THE ISRAELI ATTACK AND ACTS OF TERRORISM CARRIED OUT FROM JORDAN. THE SOVIET UNION SAID IT FAVOURED STEPS TO PUNISH ISRAEL.
