Background: AFRICA - THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS FROM KENYA THIS WEEK CORDONED OFF A MINING TOWNSHIP IN SWAZILAND IN AN ATTEMPT TO BREAK THE THREE-WEEK-OLD STRIKE.

THE TROOPS, A NOTED SCOTTISH REGIMENT, WERE RUSHED IN FROM KENYA LAST WEEK.THEY COMPRISE AN ENTIRE INFANTRY BATTALION.THEIR MAIN JOB WAS TO DEAL WITH A SERIES OF INCIDENTS THAT HAVE SPRUNG FROM THE STRIKES.

THE TROUBLE BEGAN WHEN AFRICANS AT THE ASBESTOS MINE CAME OUT OVER A WAGE CLAIM.SWAZILAND POLICE FOUND THEY NEEDED HELP WHEN THE STRIKES SPREAD ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.THEY ARE KNOWN TO BE LINKED TO POLITICAL DEMANDS, BASICALLY FOR ONE-MAN-ONE-VOTE.

AT THE TOWNSHIP - NEAR HAVELOCK MINE - THE TROOPS ROUNDED UP 153 STRIKERS.THEY WERE SUBSEQUENTLY CHARGED WITH STRIKING ILLEGALLY.THE TROOPS - 300 OF THEM - PROMISED PROTECTION TO THOSE WHO WERE WILLING TO RETURN TO WORK.SEARCHES WERE MADE AND SOME STICKS AND BATONS FOUND.IN THE SAME AREA, POLICE USED TEAR-GAS TO BREAK UP A CROWD OF OTHER STRIKING AFRICANS.SEVENTY WERE ARRESTED.

SWAZILAND A BRITISH PROTECTORATE BORDERS ON SOUTH AFRICA.UNREST BEGAN THREE WEEKS AGO WITH A STRIKE AND THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL OUTBREAKS OF VIOLENCE.BUT TODAY (TUESDAY) THE 1000 WORKERS AT THE MINE RETURNED TO WORK AND THINGS WERE REPORTED TO BE RETURNING TO NORMAL.
