  • Description

DURING THE PAST TWO DAYS FIREMEN AND VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN TRYING TO CONTROL A PINE FOREST FIRE RAGING NEAR NICE, ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA. THE FIRE BROKE OUT YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AND HAS ALREADY DESTROYED HUNDREDS OF ACRES OF TIMBER LAND.

STRONG WINDS HAMPERED THE EFFORTS OF THE FIREMEN AND VOLUNTEERS WHO WERE JOINED BY SAILORS AND MARINES FROM THE UNITED STATES SIXTH FLEET. THE WORST SPOT WAS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF EZE, WHERE FIREMEN HALTED FLAMES YARDS FROM HOUSES AND THE HISTORIC CHATEAU DE BALZAN.

HOLIDAY MAKERS TRAVELLING ALONG THE LOWER CORNICHE, (A HIGHWAY RUNNING ALONG THE RIVIERA), HAD TO MAKE A DETOUR AROUND EZE ALONG THE MIDDLE CORNICHE. THE ROAD WAS LATER RE-OPENED TO TRAFFIC.

DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE RIVIERA HAS BEEN ENJOYING WARM, SUNNY WEATHER, IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE FIRE MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A HOLIDAY-MAKER DROPPING A LIGHTED MATCH OR CIGARETTE IN PART OF THE FOREST.
