  • Description

AN EXHIBITION OF THE PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS AND SKETCHES OF EUGENE DELACROIX, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FRENCH PAINTERS OF THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY, OPENED AT THE ROYAL ACADEMY IN LONDON TODAY (WEDNESDAY).

PERHAPS THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF DELACROIX'S WORK EVER ASSEMBLED AT ONE TIME IN BRITAIN, IT INCLUDES, AMONG THE 200 PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS ON SHOW, HIS FIRST KNOWN COMMISSION, "THE VIRGIN OF THE HARVEST" AND SOME OF HIS MORE MATURE AND BETTER KNOWN WORKS. WORKS IN PRIVATE COLLECTIONS AND MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES IN BRITAIN, THE CONTINGENT AND THE UNITED STATES HAVE BEEN LOANED FOR THE EXHIBITION.

BORN IN 1798, EUGENE DELACROIX WAS THE SON OF CHARLES DELACROIX, THE FOREIGN MINISTER OF FRANCE UNDER THE DIRECTORY. HE SHOWED AN EARLY INCLINATION TOWARDS PAINTING AND AT THE AGE OF 15, BEGAN TAKING LESSONS FROM PIERRE GUERIN. HIS FIRST KNOWN COMMISSION CAME FOUR YEARS LATER, WHILE HIS FIRST SALON PAINTING, "DANTE AND VIRGIL IN HELL" WAS DATED 1822. IT WAS RADICAL ENOUGH TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THE ARTIST.

HIS FORTUNES FLUCTUATED WITH THE FORTUNES, ALMOST, OF BONAPARTIST POLITICS; AND HIS CAREER WAS ENSURED AFTER THE BONAPARTIST REVIVALS OF 1830 AND 1850. HIS EARLY WORK, HOWEVER, WAS INFLUENCED BY THE ENGLISH SCHOOL, PARTICULARLY CONSTABLE, AND HE BECAME INTERESTED IN COLOUR. HIS THEMES WERE OF A LITERARY NATURE, ALTHOUGH MANY OF THE WORKS WHICH WON HIM ACCLAIM OR CRITICISM WERE OF A VIOLENT NATURE.

THE "MASSACRES OF CHAOS", "BATTLE OF NANCY" AND THE "BATTLE OF POITIERS" TYPIFY THE PAINTERS DWELLING ON THE THEMES OF HORROR AND DEATH. IT WAS ONLY IN THE 1830'S THAT HIS WORK BEGAN TO CHANGE; IT BECAME MORE SOBER.

THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE HE WAS ATTACKED FOR HIS INABILITY TO DRAW, BUT HE IS ACKNOWLEDGED AS A FINE DRAUGHTSMAN WITH AN AFFINITY WITH THE BAROQUE SCHOOL.

DELACROIX DIED IN AUGUST 1863, A MAN HAD TRIED EVERYTHING IN ART AND IN MOST CASES -- WHETHER PAINTING CEILINGS OR MINIATURES -- ACHIEVING SUCCESS. HE REGARDED HIMSELF AS A REVOLUTIONARY IN ART, AND WHILE HE DISLIKED HIS OWN TIMES, HE REFLECTED IT IN EVERYTHING HE DID. HIS VARIETY AND ORIGINAL APPROACH HAVE INFLUENCED ARTISTS SINCE HIS TIME, EVEN THE WORK OF RENOIR, CEZANNE, VAN GOGH AND EVEN PICASSO CONTAIN TRACES OF HIS INFLUENCE.
