  • Description

The Prime Minister of Mauritius Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam had a half-hour meeting with France's President Pompidou at the Elysee Palace on Tuesday.

The leading topic for discussion just before the France-British summit on Britain's entry to the Common Market was the future of Mauritius sugar exports. The Mauritius Prime Minister has already had talks on the issue in London with British Government trade representatives.

After the meeting Sir Seewoosagur said he was convinced that President Pompidou would take the problems of Mauritius into account in the forthcoming summit with Mr. Edward Heath. The U.K. at present takes most of Mauritius' exports, and a large part of the sugar crop.

Sir Seewoosagur was also asked about his trade with South Africa after his talk with President Pompidou. He said his recent private visit to South Africa did not mean that he approved of the system of apartheid. Though trade was possible, Mauritius could not have a political dialogue with South Africa.
