  • Description

The African Information Ministers' Conference in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa has opened with a strong call for the Establishment of the long-awaited Pan-African news agency, (PAFNA). The newly-elected Chairman of the conference, Major Girma Yilma, the present Information Minister of Ethiopia, said the PAFNA was necessary to extricate African from the information monopoly of a handful of western news agencies. Major Girma said that the idea of establishing PAFNA was raised in 1963...and for the past sixteen years PAFNA had been on the agenda of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). He said it was tie for action on the idea.

SYNOPSIS: The information Ministers' conference is being held in Addis Ababa's Africa Hall. Chairman, Mengistu Haile-Marian, Ethiopia's Head of States was welcomed as he arrived for the conference on Wednesday (4 APRIL).

Colonel Mengistu addressing the conference, which has been convened by the O.A.U., said that the time was ripe for the establishment of PAFNA. He said the failure to establish the Pan-African news agency while the monopoly of the collection and dissemination of news in Africa remained in the hand of aliens had undermined the climate of understanding and confidence in Africa, so necessary for political, economic and social progress.

The Ethiopian leader said that PAFNA should be a medium which spearheads the struggle for the total liberation of the continent, and should project the anti-racist and anti-apartheid posture of the broad masses of Africa. Colonel Mengistu said the vicious propaganda had bee carried on against Africa by the western mass media monopolists. He told delegates to the five-day conference that they should feel sorry for failing to establish PAFNA as an instrument for projecting the true image of member states of the OAU.
