    Background: BEIRUT, LEBANON

INTRODUCTION: Camille Chamoun, the leader of the Lebanese Nationalist Party, has described Libya's offer to provide his country with an air defence missile system, as a "dangerous initiative". Speaking in Beirut, the former President said that acceptance of the offer could lead to more destruction.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Chamoun's comments came during an interview with newsmen, following Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's offer of military help. Although hard hit by Israeli air raids last month, he said aid from Libya would lead to more violence.

The Nationalist Party leader maintained the Libyan offer was excessively dangerous, saving that Lebanon doesn't need missiles. Colonel Gaddafi, or the Syrians. He argued that if such missiles, based in Lebanon, were launched against an Israeli aircraft, the Israelis would feel justified to retaliate with more bombing raids.

A special defence committee is studying the Libyan offer, and any received from other states. Mr. Chamoun concluded by saving accepting Libya's help would be irresponsible.
