Fighting along the border died down for about a month before Mr. sary's visit to Thailand. His talks with the Thai leaders followed a visit by the Thai Foreign Minister Mr. Upadit to the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh in February. Those talks did little to stop the border violence. The two countries are also concerned to solve the problem of Cambodian refugees. There are now over fourteen thousand refugees living in settlement camps in Thailand.

Background: The Cambodian Foreign Minister, Ieng Sary met the Thai Prime Minister Kriangsak Chamanand, in Bangkok on Sunday (16 July) during his four-day official visit to Thailand. Mr. Sary's talks with the Thai leaders have centred on the fighting along the border between Cambodia and Thailand which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Thai villagers during the last three years.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Sary met General Kriangsak in the Thai Prime Minister's official residence. He has also had talks with Upadit Pacharyangkun, the Thai Foreign Minister, and reached immediate agreement that the violence, which dates back to the Communist take-over in Cambodia in 1975, should cease.
After the meeting, General Kriangsak said that although he could not guarantee peace would come to the border, but he and Mr. Sary had discussed measures which could be taken by both sides to end the fighting. Mr. Sary maintained throughout his visit that the border conflict was caused by misunderstanding, denying Thai allegations that it was due to Cambodian based Khmer Rouge forces and Thai Communists. Mr. Sary has also agreed to the re-opening of diplomatic relations and the exchange of Ambassadors between Cambodia and Thailand.
