Background: Film of arrest of Negroes in Jackson, Mississippi on 3 June 1963. Five men and a girl were arrested while sitting on a curb in downtown Jackson, protesting segregated public facilities.
The arrest came at the same time Mayor Allen Thompson was telling a news conference that the Jackson authorities were taking applications from Negroes to become members of the city's police force and serve as guards at street crossings where children went to school.
The mayor also indicated that Jackson's racial troubles were coming to an end. He spoke too soon. The next day (4 June), Negroes again staged a series of demonstrations against segregation.
