Construction work is in progress in the Soviet Union on the world's highest dam. The will be 271 metres high and take the shape of an arch man completed.
SYNOPSIS: These mountains will provide a scenic background to the dam which is being built in Soviet Georgia.
The water of the river Inguri are to be used to fill a canyon at the foot of the dam.
A number of people-from welders to engineers and construction workers-are now busily engaged on the project.
First phase of the Inguri hydro power station is expected to be completed before the end of this year. It will then begin to supply water to Caucasus, Armenia, Azerbaidjan as well as to Georgia.
The power plant itself will be placed inside the mountains. And wide pipelines are being laid along tunnels which have been cut through the mountains and joined with the station.
Part of the project is the construction of a 27 kilometre-long artificial lake.
Four giant units have been set up on top of the mountains to operate these containers via overhead cables. And the building materials they carry is made at three plants near the site.
