  • Description

Bamako, capital city of the central African republic of Mali, has bee extensively damaged by flooding after heavy rainfall ended the five-year drought that affected the Sahel belt of Africa.

The flood situation in Mali has been largely ignored by the world's press and it is only recently that the destruction of large sections of Bamako has been brought to light.

This came about through the World Federation of Paired Cities announcing the launch of "Operation Cement". Bamako is "twinned" with three cities -- Angers in France, Leipzig in the German Democratic Republic and Akabade in the soviet Union. All three are being asked to help with the reconstruction of bamako, particularly in the purchase of three million metric tons of cement. National government are also being approached by the Federation.

In Bamako large numbers of people have been made homeless and many of them are living in poor conditions in tent encampments around the city.

It is estimated that in Bamako alone 11 people died in the floods, 47 were injured, and 1,836 homes were destroyed, leaving 3,573 people without shelter.
