  • Description

King Hussein of Jordan arrived in Damascus on Thursday morning (3 April) for an unexpected one-day visit to the Syrian capital.

The Jordanian ruler was accompanied on his flight from Amman by his personal representative, Prince Mohammed, his Premier and Foreign Minister, Zeid Al-Rifai, his military chief of staff, Lieutenant-General Sherif Zeid Ben Shaker, and his aide-de-camp, Brigadier Awwad Al-Khalidi.

Authoritative sources said that King Hussein and Syria's President Assad discussed the current situation in the Middle East and their own bilateral relations during a closed 2 1/2-hour meeting. Relations between the two countries have been strained since King Hussein's suppression of Palestinian guerrillas in Jordan in 1970, and recent efforts to promote an Arab summit meeting that would include both Jordan and the Palestinian Liberation organisation (PLO) have founded because of this still-smouldering feud.

President Assad gave a luncheon in honour of King Hussein, with the guests including Premier Ayoubi and high-ranking civilian and military officials, and later saw the Jordan ruler off at Damascus International Airport.
