Background: With a heavily armed escort, Maj-Gen. D.A. Kendrew drove to Akrotiri RAF based on October 11 at the end of his two year stay in Cyprus as Director of Military Operations. Before he boarded his plane, the General gave a final message to his troops. "Well done! It will soon be over".
EOKA terrorists mined Kendrew's car on September 26, while he was driving through Nicosia. The bomb wrecked his vehicle, killed one soldier and injured two others. The General was unhurt.
Major-General K.T. Darling, a paratrooper with a reputation in the Army for toughness, takes over from Kendrew.
The outgoing commander has been appointed Director of Infantry and will be based at the War Office, London.
