    "VASA", THE 17TH CENTURY SWEDISH WARSHIP RECOVERED IN APRIL FROM THE BOTTOM OF STOCKHOLM HARBOUR AFTER BEING SUBMERGED FOR MORE THAN 300 YEARS, IS CURRENTLY AT THE NEW "VASA DOCKYARD" AT DJURGAARDEN IN THE CAPITAL. SHE WAS TOWED THERE ENCASED IN ALUMINIUM.

    THIS WILL BE HER FINAL RESTING PLACE, FOR SHE IS TO BECOME A NATIONAL MONUMENT. THE STATE IS HAVING TO PAY MORE THAN TWO MILLION KRONER FOR THE RECOVERY AND PRESERVATION OF THE VESSEL. THE "VASA" BANK ON HER MAIDEN VOYAGE, BEFORE EVEN LEAVING SWEDISH WATERS. ONE SOCIALIST MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT IS AGAINST THE PLAN, HOWEVER. HE SAID IT WAS AN INSULT TO SWEDISH ENGINEERS AND SHIPBUILDERS TO RAISE "THIS MONSTROSITY" TO A NATIONAL MONUMENT - "A SHIP MUST BE ABLE TO FLOAT".

    "VASA" WILL BE THE FOCAL POINT OF A MUSEUM NOW GOING UP AT THE DOCKYARD. SOME OF THE 14,000 ARTICLES FOUND ON THE SHIP ARE ALREADY ON SHOW. THESE INCLUDE THE BIG LION FIGUREHEAD AND ODD ITEMS SUCH AS PLATS AND KNIVES. THE REMAINDER WILL BE EXHIBITED WHEN THE MUSEUM IS COMPLETED.
