    A modern Noah's Ark was prepared for flight in Valletta on Thursday (13 January) as the domestic pets of departing British service families were put aboard a specially-chartered cargo aircraft for the flight to Britain. About 300 animals and birds were sent to Britain on the special flight. Most of them would have had to be destroyed it left in Malta but animal-lovers in Britain subscribed to a rescue campaign promoted by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and a London newspaper.

    On Friday (14 January), Maltese Prime Minister Dom Mintoff flew to Rome for last-hour peace talks in the crisis. There, he'll meet British Defence Minister Lord Carrington.
