Background: At a special press conference in Cairo on Saturday (26th Sept) the President of Sudan, General Jaafar El-Nimeiry....leader of the eight-man peace team which negotiated a Jordan ceasefire on Friday (25 Sept).... violently denounced Jordan's Armed Forces, and charged King Hussein with a systematic attempt at ??? the entire Palestine Liberation Movement. The conference was held between sessions of the summit meeting of Arab leaders considering the crisis.
General El-Nimeiry told newsmen that the Jordanian Government was a unique one, in the King Hussein was at once King, Prime Minister, Supreme Commander, and Chief of Staff. The King, he said, was an accomplice in a plot to wipe out all Palestine Resistance Fighters...even all Palestinians, and he had heard of steps being taken to carry out the plan despite frequent pledges to the contrary.
General El-Nimeiry said there had been at least 30,000 casualties in the past ten days of fighting in Jordan. The General was also quoted by the Middle East News Agency as saying that King Hussen's Army had suffered at least 5,000 casualties and lost 93 tanks and a number of armoured vehicles, while 25,000 Palestinians had been either killed or wounded. General El-Nimeiry had earlier accompanied Guerrilla leader Yasser Arafat from Amman to Cairo to take part in further summit talks between Arab leaders. President Nasser of the United Arab Republic, King Feisal of Saudi Arabia, and the Libyan leader Colonel El Gaddafi are among the delegates attending the talks.
Delegates have unanimously supported General Nimeiry's criticisms but have at the same time welcomed King Hussen's decision to attend the talks in Cairo today (Sunday 27 the Sept) and defend his attitudes to the current crisis. At the talks, King HusseIn will come face to face with Guerrilla leader Yasser Arafat before the heads of the Arab world.
